What is a Mansard Loft Conversion?

Named after a famous 17th century French architect Francois Mansart, the Mansard Loft Conversion has a stylish and elegant look about them. These types of conversions are constructed by increasing the height of both party walls on each side of the property, effectively creating an additionally storey which in turn  offers considerable more head height and overall living soace compared to other loft conversion options.

These types of conversions are typically built at the rear of detached, semi-detached, terraced or period properties and consist of a flat roof, windows which are typically housed inside dormers, and rear facing wall that slopes inwards at an angle of 72° The sloping facing wall is designed to make the structure look softer from the outside, however, the downside to this is the sacrificing of head height compared to that of a dormer loft conversion which is built with a vertical facing wall.

The gables can be constucted from brickwork to match the existing property but they can also be built out of a wooden frame and cladded with tile or slate to make it look less obtrusive.
