What is a Hip -to-Gable Loft Conversion?
Hip-to-gable loft conversions are ideal options for semi-detached or detached properties that have a hipped roof. Before moving on let’s briefly explain what exactly is a hipped roof.
Essentially a hipped roof has sloping sides in addition to slopes at the front and the back of the property. Hipped roofs generally have limited loft space therefore if you want to convert this type of loft then the only way is to extend the property.
So in essence a hip-to-gable loft conversion extends the property by replacing one of the sloping roofs with a vertical wall which is known as a gable, thereby creating additional living or usable space inside the loft area.
If you wish to maximise your loft space, you could also extend the opposite sloping side whereby creating a double hip-to-gable loft conversion on your property. You also have the additional option of combining a dormer loft conversion at the rear of your property to the double hip-to gable conversion to entend the interior living/usable space even more.
Hip-to-gable loft conversions are suitable for a wide range of properties including detached, semi-detached, bugalowsand end of terrace properties. However it’s not possible to construct this type of loft conversion on mid-terrace property due to the simple fact that they don’t have a hip-end roof.
How Much Would a Hip-to-Gable Loft Conversion Cost?
Hip-to-gable loft conversions are a fantastic way of adding a considerable amount of additional floor space and headroom to your property. As mentioned above these types of conversions are only possible on certain types of property but when constructed properly by a trusted and experienced Swansea loft conversion specialist they offer so many benefits and are well worth investing in.
If you choose a double hip-to-gable conversion (as explained above), this will obviously be more expensive than a single conversion, but don’t be mistaken to think that it will be double the price. This would not be the case due to the fact that a great deal of work needed to be carried out for a double conversion will be necessary for single hip-to gable conversion.
So, when it comes to calculating the costs of a hip-to-gable conversions, a huge amount will depend on the size of the loft conversion and the quality of the finish. However if we had to give you a rough estimate cost, it is likely to range from between £40,000 and £50,000.
Do Hip-to-Gable-Loft Conversions Require Planning?
You’ll be pleased to hear that for the majority of hip-to-gable loft conversions you do not require planning permission. Structures of this nature fall under legislation called ‘permitted development rights’ .
Permitted Development Rights which was introduced back in 2008, permits home and property owners to make certain types of structural changes to their property without planning permission from the local authority.
There are some exceptions however, for example if your property is listed or located in a conservation area you may have some planning restrictions and therefore need to apply for planning permission.
